Vimshottari Dasha
Vimshottari Dasha is a very important Dasha as compare to all other Dasha's. Vimshottari Dasha is widely used in Vedic Astrology and it comes under the Parashara Jyotish.
Vimshottari Dasha is a branch of Astrology which tells more about the important events which run in our life.
Vimshottari Dasha is divided into three parts.
1) Maha Dasha
2) Antar Dasha
3) Pratyantar Dasha
Mahadasha runs for a very long period. The duration of Mahadasha for each planet is different.
The Mahadasha of Sun runs for six years which is a very short duration.
The Mahadaha of Venus runs for twenty years which is a very long duration.
The Mahadasha of Jupiter runs for sixteen years.
The Mahadasha of Saturn runs for nineteen years.
The Mahadasha of Rahu runs for eighteen years.
The Mahadasha of Mercury runs for seventeen years.
The Mahadasha of Mars runs for seven years.
The Mahadasha of Moon runs for ten years.
The Mahadasha of Saturn runs for nineteen years.
When people face the Mahadasha of Jupiter planets then that Mahadasha runs till 16 years. After that, the Mahadasha of other planets initiates and this process continues.
The results depend upon the placement of Jupiter in all divisional charts therefore one should carefully analyse the all divisional charts for accurate predictions.
Vimshottari Dasha is further divided into sub-parts that are Antardasha, Pratyantardasha, Sookshma Dasha, char Dasha.
Among all, the foremost important are Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar Dasha.
Each Mahadasha has divided into Antardasha of 9 planets and each Antardasha has further divided into Pratyantar Dasha of 9 planets.

If a person faces the Mahadasha of Moon and Moon is strong in his or her horoscope but still, people are not getting the regular good results?
Why this happens?. This happens because when a particular Mahadasha runs, Antardasha of 9 planets will also be running that's why a person does not get the regular good results for 10 years of Moon Mahadasha. Moon is strong but analyse of other planets are also important.
Let's take an example: If Rahu Antardasha is running under the Moon Mahadasha and Rahu is present in Dusthana houses in debilitated zodiac signs then remedy for Rahu is needed to get good results.
Dusthana houses are 6th house, 8th house and 12th house.
If Moon sits with Rahu or Ketu then it creates Grahan Dosh which is an inauspicious Yog.
In the same manner, If Rahu Antardasha under Moon Mahadasha is running then it is not a good period until Moon and Rahu placements are strong. This condition also applies to Mahadasha and Antardasha predictions.
There are some parameters which are needed to analyse for Vimshottari Dasha.
a) The first parameter is that look at your Ascendant horoscope. Check the placement of Mahadasha planets and its lord which is running in your horoscope.
A person will also get results of those houses who is the lord of Mahadasha planets. For example, a person belongs to Cancer ascendant and Saturn is present in 7th house and also faces the Mahadasha of Saturn. Saturn is the Lord of 7th house and 8th house hence it will also give the results of 7th and 8th house.
Results could be good or bad depending upon the placement of planets present in the 7th house or 8th house and that results will be given by 7th house.
Natural benefic planets are Jupiter, Moon, Mercury, Venus.
Natural malefic planets that are Sun, Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu.
Now, check functional benefic and functional malefic planets in your horoscope. Let's take an example of Taurus Ascendant.
For Taurus Ascendant: Venus, Jupiter, Mars are functional malefic planets although we can say that they are natural benefic planets but for this particular ascendant, it is a functional malefic planet.
For Taurus ascendant, Venus is the Lord of 6th house. Jupiter is the Lord of 8th house. Mars is the lord of the 12th house hence a person can expect mixed results both good and bad during the Mahadasha of Jupiter, Mars, Venus.
Next step is to check the Nakshatra of Mahadasha planets because it will help to analyse the qualities of a person.
The person displays the quality of that nakshatra in which the planet is present.
For example, Saturn Mahadasha is running and Saturn is present in the Pushya Nakshatra then now Saturn will bring the results of Pushya Nakshatra. Saturn is also the Lord of Pushya Nakshatra hence the intensity of Pushya Nakshatra results will be more.
Now, check whether the planet sits with other planets or not. For example, Venus sits with Mars and Mars Mahadasha is running then the person will get the results of Venus too because there is Venus-Mars conjunction in a horoscope.
Next step is to check the Bhav Chalit horoscope. Bhav Chalit horoscope is another horoscope which is used for Mahadasha analysis. In Bhav Chalit horoscope, planets are present randomly in different houses.
Let's take an example: Saturn Mahadasha is running in the horoscope and Saturn is present in the 7th house but In Bhav Chalit horoscope, Saturn is present in 9th house, it means that the qualities of Saturn will be gain by 9th house.
Bhav Chalit horoscope is very important for Mahadasha analysis.
Next method is very accurate i.e. Mahadasha Lagna
As Saturn Mahadasha was running as discussed above and Saturn was present in the 7th house.

Now how to calculate Mahadasha Lagna.

To calculate Mahadasha Lagna, look at the placement of Saturn in your Ascendant horoscope and rotate your horoscope by placing Saturn in the 1st house without changing the zodiac sign in which it is present to get Mahadasha Lagna. Now we get Libra Ascendant of Mahadasha Lagna.PFB image:

Now Analyse Mahadasha Lagna. In Mahadasha Lagna, we see that Saturn is present in 1st house.
Here, Saturn is also the Lord of 4th house and 5th house, and hence Saturn will give results of 4th house and 5th house too which Saturn represents for 4th house and 5th house and the results will be given by 1st house.
Also, check aspect or conjunction of Saturn for accurate prediction. Mahadasha Lagna is more accurate as compare to Bhav Chalit hence importance should be given to the Mahadasha Lagna.
Also, check the Transit to know about the important events. Jupiter and Saturn play an important role in Transit.
